I have spent a long time living in Canada and have continued to visit regularly for both business and personal reasons. As a result, I believe I know the country well and have developed a strong personal connection. Canada fascinates me in many ways, but what stands out most are its quiet diversity, its rule-based nature, openness, and innovative spirit\u2014qualities that make it a highly interesting place for economic activities. And precisely because of this, I observe with growing interest and unease how Canadian companies are increasingly facing political uncertainties and economic challenges, especially concerning the U.S. market.<\/p>

There was even the rather unusual suggestion that Canada could become a U.S. state\u2014a notion that many Canadians, along with others, including myself, view as both unlikely, to say the least, and concerning.<\/p>

But because the EU\u2019s institutional structures are designed to manage such conflicts and find solutions, Europe remains a stable partner. Compared to the sudden and often unpredictable political shifts in the U.S. and the increasing willingness to resort to violence, Europe still offers a predictable environment for long-term investments.<\/p>

Je suis fermement convaincu que la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape consiste \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper une nouvelle mani\u00e8re de penser et une nouvelle approche. Il ne suffit plus de s'en tenir aux partenariats traditionnels simplement parce qu'ils ont fonctionn\u00e9 par le pass\u00e9. M\u00eame les revenus auparavant stables tir\u00e9s des affaires avec notre voisin du sud sont menac\u00e9s \u00e0 moyen ou m\u00eame \u00e0 court terme. Au contraire, les entreprises canadiennes doivent \u00eatre pr\u00eates \u00e0 combiner leurs traditions commerciales uniques avec de nouvelles strat\u00e9gies pour rester \u00e0 l'\u00e9preuve du futur.<\/p>

As mentioned, Europe offers an economic environment characterized by stability and clear rules\u2014a trait of immeasurable value in uncertain times. With the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), Canadian companies have direct access to one of the world\u2019s largest and most diversified markets. CETA removes trade barriers, protects investments, and facilitates the trade of services. I will address the debate over CETA\u2019s potential downsides elsewhere.<\/p>

But Europe is much more than just a large market. It is a network\u2014some call it a patchwork\u2014of highly developed markets like Germany and France, as well as emerging regions in Eastern Europe with enormous growth potential. This diversity allows Canadian companies to target their products and services effectively and benefit from the high purchasing power and innovative spirit of European countries.<\/p>

Les Europ\u00e9ens mettent davantage l'accent sur la justice sociale, la communaut\u00e9 et la durabilit\u00e9, tandis que les \u00c9tats-Unis privil\u00e9gient souvent les r\u00e9alisations individuelles et la concurrence \u00e9conomique. Les entreprises canadiennes peuvent et doivent tirer parti de ces points communs avec l'Europe pour construire une relation de confiance et des relations commerciales durables.<\/p>

La diversification, cl\u00e9 du succ\u00e8s<\/strong><\/p>

Une autre raison pour laquelle l'Europe est un choix id\u00e9al pour les entreprises canadiennes r\u00e9side dans la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de se diversifier. Le fait de ne compter que sur le march\u00e9 am\u00e9ricain comporte des risques qui peuvent \u00eatre exacerb\u00e9s par des d\u00e9cisions politiques ou le protectionnisme \u00e9conomique. L'Europe offre la possibilit\u00e9 de r\u00e9partir ces risques et d'ouvrir de nouvelles opportunit\u00e9s de croissance. Une petite remarque sur l'argument de la distance : de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse \u00e0 l'Irlande, il y a environ 4 100 km, alors que la distance jusqu'\u00e0 Vancouver est de 4 400 km.<\/p>

Canada : Rejoignez l'UE !<\/strong><\/p>

Additionally, there is an exciting perspective that may sound far-fetched at first but holds great potential: the idea of a potential EU membership for Canada. For me, this is more than just the accession of 41 million people and the expansion of the economic area\u2014it is also about strengthening our liberal democracies. Such a step would further deepen the integration between Canada and Europe and give Canadian companies access to one of the world\u2019s largest single markets\u2014without trade barriers and with maximum stability.<\/p>

Conclusion : L'Europe en tant que d\u00e9cision strat\u00e9gique<\/strong><\/p>

For me, Europe is far more than just an alternative to the U.S.\u2014it is a strategic decision for the future of Canadian companies. The political stability, economic benefits of CETA, and cultural commonalities create an environment where long-term growth is possible.<\/p>

I firmly believe that now is the right time to deepen this partnership and harness Europe\u2019s potential. The question Canadian companies should be asking is not whether they want to preserve the past but how they want to shape the future.
